Engineered Garments has partnered with Saucony to reimagine the Shadow Original as a formal-leaning hybrid, swapping athletic mesh for full-grain leather and brogue perforations. The black and white collaboration arrives June 6 exclusively through Nepenthes.

The Shadow Original has long operated as Saucony's understated retro runner—a shoe content to exist in the margins of 1980s running culture. Engineered Garments, however, sees potential in unexpected places. By draping the silhouette in premium leather and introducing wingtip tailoring, the Tokyo-based label has effectively repositioned the runner as a dressier proposition, one that treats heritage athletic tooling as a canvas for subcultural refinement.
The execution here is restrained. A monochromatic black and white palette keeps visual noise minimal, allowing the material work to speak. The full-grain leather upper receives meticulous brogue perforated detailing—the kind of formal flourish you'd find on a Goodyear-welted oxford—while a signature wingtip toe cap curves across the forefoot. This is shoe-making language borrowed from the 1950s, applied to a running shoe blueprint that predates most of Engineered Garments' designers.
Design & Construction
What keeps this from veering too far toward pure formalism is Saucony's insistence on athletic utility. The leather upper sits atop the standard Shadow Original sole unit—lightweight EVA foam midsole paired with a durable rubber outsole—preserving the shoe's everyday wearability and shock absorption properties. It's a deliberate tension: old-school tailoring sitting on sporty, proven running geometry. The result reads as neither dress shoe nor performance runner, but something closer to the Japanese fascination with sartorial hybridity.
